Island chef to prepare televised dishes with Cape Breton newcomers

SYDNEY — The island’s collective palate will grow with the airing of six episodes of “Be My Guest — Cooking With Newcomers.”
The series of shows on local cable television will focus on traditional dishes prepared by some of Cape Breton’s newest residents — those who have moved here from around the globe or those who have returned home after extended time away from the island.
Local chef Lars Willum is producing and hosting the shows, which have been commissioned by the Cape Breton County Economic Development Authority. Seaside Communications is directing and airing the series.
The first show in the series will air on Seaside Communications’ Channel 10 Wednesday at 5 p.m. as well as Friday at 5:30 p.m. The shows will air each week at those times.
“I have done 35 ‘Be My Guest’ cooking shows, promoting Cape Breton food producers and tourism destination points around the island, and then I came up with this idea (“Cooking With Newcomers”),” said Willum, explaining that he feels it’s equally important to embrace other cultures, promote their stories and celebrate the different traditions, including cuisine.
Featured cooks will include Cape Breton residents Abdul and Rubina Hameed, Sylvie Gerbasi, Annett Wolf, Carolyn Dunn, Lindsay and Hoona Kim, and Morningstar Pinto, with dishes from as far as Germany, Denmark and South Korea, as well as other regions of Canada, being highlighted.
Each half-hour episode will begin with an introductory chat between Willum and the featured chef, before they then cook a meal together, and sit down to enjoy it.
Eileen Lannon Oldford, CEO of CBCEDA, said the goal of the new TV program is to introduce island residents to some of their new neighbours, and the unique traditions and culture they have brought with them.
“We invite Cape Bretoners to watch “Be My Guest” airing on Seaside cable and meet Cape Bretoners by choice, living their dream in Cape Breton,” said Lannon Oldford.
Willum, who moved to Cape Breton from Denmark 16 years ago, is well-known on the island, having worked as chef at several fine restaurants, and as a caterer. He was also a food columnist for the Cape Breton Post for six years, and released a cookbook, “Sea Food Through My Eyes,” last year.

Gleaning for the Transition House Foundation
In the month of October we will be taking up the challenge of bringing together Farmers, Gleaners and Community Volunteers to collect, prepare and preserve un-harvested fruits and vegetables in an effort to raise funds for the Cape Breton Transition House Foundation.
The idea of Gleaning is one that has been used throughout Canada, the United States and the world, and it is our hope that together, we can keep some of the un-harvested food in Cape Breton out of the garbage and in the hands of the community.
This year, the goal is to take the produce, preserve it, and offer it back to the community by way of packaged foods; jams, jellies, etc… to be sold at the Two Crows Farm Farmers’ Market Venue, as well as by other interested parties.
The Gleaning Campaign will raise funds for the Transition House Foundation, with the hope of providing ongoing care and support of women in the community.
This year our goal is to start small, gain interest and raise awareness. I would greatly appreciate your help in any way possible, whether that is as a contributor of canning supplies, un-harvested fruit, a volunteer for the gleaning process or a canning expert!
As part of our efforts, we will be contacting local food suppliers, printing shops and stores in the hopes of gaining volunteers and products for the process. If agreed upon, I would love to include you as a supporter of the initiative.
Thank you for taking the time to read this letter. If you have any questions or concerns or are ready to help with the process, please visit our contact page, or click here to contact us.
For more information on the Cape Breton Transition House Foundation click here.
Donations in the form of canning supplies, or other useful products can be dropped off at the Two Crows Booth at the Farmers' Market on Saturday, any time between 8:30 and 1:00. Thanks again!
We have made some great advances in the gleaning department. The Farmers' Market has donated their certified kitchen, and we are slowly getting all of the canning supplies we need to make this all work.
It looks like we have the schedule all figured out for the gleaning and processing of the fruit.
The two canning sessions will take place beginning at 10 a.m. on Sunday Oct. 3th and then on Sunday Oct. 17th.
This week Wednesday and Saturday we will be harvesting cranberries.
The weeks after that we will be arranging trips to a few local farms for apple picking! yahoo...
